If this were Spanish, I'd know it was a telegraphic use. Is that the explanation for the Australian one?

Not a collector of Australian stamps, but telegraph usage is as good an explanation as any. Does the stamp have a postmark cancellation as well? If so, that might offer another clue to its origin. Could you post an image of the stamp? That would help too. You might even get a reply from a collector of Australian stamps.
