#1

Post by Interstellar »

Hi all

I have a 1/2d Orange QEII postage stamp overprinted 'CANCELLED' Cannot find this listed anywhere. Do you think somebody has just printed the O/P themselves?

Any help

Can't help with that one. You wil need a specialised catalogue e.g. SG volume 3
(it may be available at your library.)
Failing that ask one of the main dealers e.g. BB Stamps

That's not an overprint, but a cancellation (since it says so). Perhaps one for fiscal and/or accounting purposes.

I tend to agree with jmh67 that this is a stamped cancellation. However, being curious, I did pull out my copy of SG GB pre-decimal specialized catalogue. No mention of anything resembling the above.

You might want to check there:

Since your stamp is perf., It could be a "pre cancelled" stamp for a huge amount of mailing to do... and to be used only by someone who has an official approbation...

We don't have precancels in Britain, so that's not the case. It looks like a fiscal use, but that's a bit strange — when that ½d stamp was issued the smallest fiscal use was 2d on receipts.
